Why Archon costs $79 / month

A personal note on what the founder canon underneath actually buys you, and why this isn’t priced like ChatGPT.

Founder note · March 22, 2026

$79 / month. Monthly only, no annual lock-in, cancel in one click. This note is the honest version of why it costs that much — what’s underneath, who it’s not for, and what stays the same if you stick around.

The comparison founders actually make

Most pricing pages compare themselves to nothing — just “starts at $X”. That’s the lie. Here are the three things a founder at $500–$30k MRR can actually do when they’re stuck:

Archon at $79 sits in the gap. Closer to a coach than a chatbot. Closer to a chatbot than a coach. The point isn’t replacing either — it’s being the thing you can actually use at the moment you’re stuck, which is the moment that matters.

What a $500/hr mentor would tell you, on demand. With your live Stripe data.

What $79 actually buys

  1. The founder canon, retrievable. Every chat turn pulls relevant excerpts from a curated corpus — Paul Graham’s entire essay catalogue, First Round Review’s 900+ operator interviews (the COO of DoorDash, the CRO of Snowflake, the CPO of Figma), 200+ deep-dive playbooks. The retrieval is semantic, so “how do I find my first 10 users” pulls Do Things That Don’t Scale automatically, even if you didn’t name it. See the full source list →
  2. Your real numbers. Connected to Stripe (and Qonto, and Pennylane). When you ask “should I raise prices?” Archon doesn’t guess — it knows your MRR, your churn this month, your ARPC, and whether your runway lets you experiment. ChatGPT can’t see this. A human coach sees it 30 days late, in a CSV you exported on Sunday.
  3. An agent, not a chatbot. When the conversation produces a concrete next step — draft this tweet, send 5 DMs to founders today, add “set up Stripe checkout” to the queue — Archon actually does it. The draft lands in your /dashboard/posts. The task lands in today’s list. You don’t re-type things.
  4. The 60-second audit, the 16-week plan, the daily report. The pre-Archon scaffolding stays — an honest verdict on your business, a 16-week roadmap, a daily 6am email summarising what shipped and what’s next.

Why not $20 like ChatGPT

Because the model isn’t the expensive part. The expensive part is the canon (license-clean curation, semantic retrieval, embedding compute), the data integrations (Stripe / Qonto / Pennylane OAuth flows, secure storage, refresh pipelines), and the model running at frontier quality for chat and Haiku for memory consolidation and Opus for the deep audit — not whichever cheap tier ChatGPT defaults to.

At $20 / month the math doesn’t close. The API alone runs $15–$25 / month for a real founder who uses the product daily. There’s no business there. Worse, there’s no incentive to keep the model frontier, which means cheaper output, which means worse advice. The opposite of what I’m trying to ship.

Why no free tier

I tried it. Three things happened, in order.

  1. The free tier filled with people who never converted and burned through the API budget.
  2. The product started bending toward those users. I caught myself prioritising features for people who weren’t going to pay — classic founder mistake.
  3. The paying users felt second-class. The signal a tool with a free tier sends is “the real product lives behind a different paywall later”. Bad framing.

The replacement: the audit on the homepage is free, takes 60 seconds, no login or card. That’s the demo. If it surfaces something you didn’t already know, $79 / month is an obvious decision against $500 / month coaching that won’t take you below $15k MRR anyway. If it doesn’t, Archon isn’t for you yet — that’s fine, come back when revenue moves.

What I commit to

  1. Cancel anytime, one click. Stripe billing portal, same day. No retention call, no exit survey, no “wait, let me transfer you”.
  2. Monthly only. No annual contracts. If Archon doesn’t earn its $79 each month, you leave that month.
  3. Price never goes up for you. If I introduce a higher tier later (Operator mode, Founder mode, whatever), the $79 rate is locked for existing subscribers for as long as you stay.

That’s the math, that’s the trade. Pricing questions land in my inbox directly — luca@beepons.com. I read every message.
